Sariska National Park


Sariska National Park is situated in the state of Rajasthan in northwestern India. Spread over a huge area of 800 sq. km, Sariska acted as a hunting reserve for the royal family of Alwar. The park which was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1958, came under the project tiger in 1979. Today it has the distinction of being one of the most visited parks in India owing to its close proximity to cities like Delhi and Jaipur. The park remains open throughout the year while the best time to visit are the months from November to June. Some ancient temples and historical monuments are situated inside the Sariska park. The wide variety of animals, birds and plants found and the picturesque surroundings of the Aravali hills make this place a naturalist's paradise.
 


Wildlife Attractions

The tiger is a major attracton at Sariska, as in most of the widlife parks in India. Besides, other wild animals such as leopard, wild dog, Jungle cat, hyena and jackal are also found. Other animals found in the perfect enviorns of Sariska include sambar, chital, nilgai, chausingha, wild boar and langur. The Talvriksh found here in abundance provides a natural habitat to the Rhesus monkeys. A large population of avian species have been preserved in the park including peafowl, grey partridge, Bush quail, Sand grouse, Tree pie, Golden backed woodpecker, Crested Serpent eagle and the Indian horned owl.

Other Attractions

Kankwari Fort

The ancient Kankwari Fort is one of the few historical monuments situated inside the Sariska National Park. The fort is famous as the place where king Aurangzeb of the Mughal dynasty once imprisoned his brother Dara Shikoh.

 


Ancient Temples

Another ancient landmark situated inside the Sariska park is the Neelkanth temples, built during the 6th to 13th century AD. The temples, now in ruins, are a major attraction for the tourists, especially the devotees of lord Shiva, visiting the park.

The Palace The palace was built to serve the royal family of Alwar during their hunting expeditions at Sariska. The palace situated inside the park has now been converted into a hotel.

The park remains open throughout the year, while the best time to visit is during the months from November to June

How to Reach
By Air - The airport at Jaipur, situated at a distance of 120 km., is the nearest airport. Regular flights connect Jaipur to major Indian cities.

By Rail - The nearest railway station is situated at Alwar, about 35 km from Sariska. Buses and taxis are available from Alwar to reach Sariska.

By Road - Sariska Wildlife Park is situated on the Delhi-Jaipur highway about 120 km from Jaipur and 200 km from Delhi. The main stoppage for people visiting Sariska is the city of Alwar, from where buses and taxis are available to reach Sariska
